Supervisor: VP of Product Development and Operations




The Director of Research & Development will play a critical role in advancing Relievant’s minimally invasive low back pain technology by leading a team of engineers in the design, development, and market launch of RF-based equipment and disposable devices. Through consistent leadership, innovation, and seasoned execution, the Director of Research & Development will help drive successful product realization. This person will work closely with the VP of Product Development and Operations, as well as internal and external stakeholders, to passionately champion next generation products and therapies.


Sunnyvale, CA – hybrid. Monday-Wednesday in the office, Thursday and Friday remote.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead projects and direct engineers in the successful and timely execution of developmental milestones, product launches, and interdepartmental needs for new RF ablation equipment and disposables that complement the company’s strategic goals and priorities.
  • Lead the innovation and development process (including concept generation, design, verification, validation, electrical testing/certification, and regulatory submission support) for next generation products.
  • Hire, develop, and lead a high performing team including development of R&D organization capabilities.
  • Manage vendor/supplier communications and relationships pertaining to the manufacturing of products in development.
  • Communicate ongoing research, product development, and testing to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Interface with all departments participating in the development timelines to meet the milestones.
  • Oversee development of protocols, processes, and equipment specifications for new products produced at contract manufacturing locations.
  • Conduct research and concept prototyping for new product development or existing product improvements.
  • Contribute inventions, new design or techniques to solve technical problems or improve existing products or processes.
  • Lead, plan, develop, and execute relevant bench-top and pre-clinical studies as needed for regulatory, clinical, and R&D requirements.
  • Provide technical support and training to sales, marketing, clinical, regulatory and manufacturing teams.
  • Interact with physicians and surgeons to understand the unmet needs.
  • Able to travel to vendors, labs, and customers as needed.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering or related discipline
  • 12+ years of experience in engineering product design
  • 8+ years of progressive management experience, leading teams both directly and indirectly
  • 5+ years of medical device industry experience in Research & Development or Operations
  • A working knowledge of new product realization, including knowledge of global regulations for the development and manufacturing of medical devices


  • Experience with energy based medical device (RF, Ultrasound, Microwave, Cryo) product development.
  • Understanding of applicable IEC 60601, HF-18, ISO, FDA and ANSI/AMI standards related to medical device testing and development.
  • In-depth understanding of taking a product from concept to commercialization with proven success.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative and cohesive work environment to ensure open and transparent communication on cross-functional project teams.
  • Demonstrated passion for hands-on leadership
  • Ability to make complex decisions and communicate with both technical and non-technical team members
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
